Tip- Traveling with a baby

Flight with a baby

Baby Airfare
Babies are under 2 years old can fly for free under the “lap infant” category for domestic with the US. However, when you travel international each airline has different rule some airline will charge 10% of a regular fare plus tax. A lap infant under 2 years old can’t redeem award travel unless you pay for a full airfare with point to get an extra seat. And after they are 2 years old you have to pay full price for an airfare which could be expensive.
Bassinets
Most international airlines do provide a basinet for a baby under 2 years old however, it is based on availability first come first serve.  Therefore, you should request for a basinet at booking.
Food
We don’t expect anything for domestic flight. However, for international they do provide a toddler food and toy. Therefore be sure to ask for a toddler menu.  At the same time it is to bring your own food in case the baby doesn’t like their food.
Backpack
For first a time parent who travels with a baby please don’t bring the whole suitcase of baby stuff as carry on. It is best to travel light remember you have a baby and a stroller that you have to carry with you.  All you need is a backpack with
• a few dippers (5 max)
• a small travel wipe
• water proof changing pad (Most planes have a changing area)
• 2 set of clothes
• a few favorite books ( small and light)
• a few toys
• Baby snacks and (formula or milk)
• And emergency kit includes any fever medicine.

Security
They do allow you to bring a stroller and any water or baby food, or milk through the gate.  Some airport they do have a private security check just for a family with small a baby which is very nice. You can bring a stroller all the way to the airplane door, but make you request a stroller tag at the main gate.

Takeoff and Landing

Be sure to provide a baby water, milk, formula, or food while takeoff or landing so the baby to prevent high elevation air pressure.

Traveling Tip – Airlines Stroller Policies (Air France)

In a previous post (here), I wrote about my family’s enjoyable experience at the Barcelona-El Prat International Airport (BCN) and how kid-friendly they made it. But then….

Our flight itinerary was Barcelona-Paris-Houston (BCN-CDG-IAH) on Air France. As usual, I folded up our umbrella stroller and placed it inside a stroller gate check bag before handing it to an attendant just before boarding the plane. Our flight to Paris was normal but it was chilly in Paris so when the plane landed I went ahead to prepare the stroller while my wife and child waited inside the warm airplane.

I waited and waited and until the whole plane had emptied except for my family and the crew. We were then told that they did not have our stroller in the back. Walking from one end of the airport while carrying your bags to the other is hard, walking from one end of the airport to other while carrying your bags AND a cranky baby that just woke up is a whole other level. We did find a stroller/push cart after we passed the passport checkpoint but by that point we were already near our connecting gate.

Later we learned that it is Air France policy to not release your stroller until you reach your final destination. All other airlines we have traveled with release your stroller whenever you disembark your flight so were surprised by Air France’s policy. We highly recommend you research your airlines’ stroller policies before flying so you do not find yourself in the same predicament.

Credit Card Advice - Chase Freedom Visa

Today I will be discussing the Chase Freedom Visa credit card. As the name implies, it is very similar to the Chase Freedom Unlimited Visa credit card as it offers a simple to understand cash back option but also could be converted easily to Chase Ultimate Rewards points if you are more point savvy. Also, these rewards do not expire while the account is active and there is no minimum to redeem for cash back.

Additionally, Chase currently offers a $150 sign up bonus if you spend $500 on the card within the first 3 months of initializing the card and another $25 when you add an authorized user that makes a purchase within the same first 3 months. And unlike many other rewards credit cards, this card has no annual fee (meaning you do not have to pay to use their credit card).

However while the Unlimited card offers a flat 1.5% cash back rate on all purchases, this card is a bit more confusing. This card offers a 5% cash back rate on certain items and 1% cash back on all other items. These 5% cash back eligible items also change every three months.

This is easier to explain by looking at Chase Freedom’s rewards schedule below:

For example, we are currently in the fourth quarter (October – December) on the rewards schedule meaning we would be eligible 5% cash back for purchases made at Walmart and at department stores, especially useful with the upcoming holiday season. However, there is a $1,500 maximum limit in combined purchases allowed meaning the maximum amount you could get 5% cash back for is $75 per quarter. All purchases not covered by the rewards categories or that exceed the maximum limit receive 1% cash back.

Depending on what you buy, you could earn more rewards using this card. Some users try maximizing the benefits by requesting both the Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Unlimited and juggling their cards to use each quarter. However, if you are like my parents, this is way too confusing and would rather stick to the Chase Freedom Unlimited card so you do not have to think about which cards to use at which store (especially since Chase could and have slightly altered the categories every year). Personally, this was one of my first credit cards and I still use it as the 5% cash back offered is one of the best rewards out there especially with no annual fee.

Credit Card Advice - Chase Freedom Unlimited Visa

If you are brand new to credit card rewards, I highly recommend the Chase Freedom Unlimited Visa as it is one of simplest to understand. Simply put, you get 1.5% cash back on EVERYTHING. For example, if you spent $1,000 on your credit card you would be eligible to receive $15 cash back, in the form of credit on future statements or checks.

If you want instant gratification of cash without the confusion of figuring out the different point systems, this card is ideal. Also, these rewards do not expire while the account is active and there is no minimum to redeem for cash back.

 Chase Freedom Unlimited

Even if you decide to get a little more point savvy in the future, you could choose to receive Chase Ultimate Rewards points instead of cash back later. Chase Ultimate Rewards points are some of the most flexible points available and could be used for airfare, hotels, gift cards, etc.

Credit Card Advice – Bonuses

The quickest way to gain several points is with credit card sign up bonuses. With these, users sign up for a credit card and if approved would receive a card with a certain bonus offer. Typically this bonus is cash back or points but could be anything of value; I remember in college they offered a free t-shirt!

The bonus is usually only given once the user meets specific requirements with a specific time period. For example, if the card offers a 100,000 point bonus with a $1,000 spending requirement within a 3 month period; that translates to the user needed to charge at least $1,000 on the credit card within three months of receiving the card to receive 100,000 points in that company’s loyalty program.

These bonus offers fluctuate throughout the year so it is a good idea to research the current offer versus previous offers. Sometimes it is beneficial to join a company’s loyalty program before trying to get their credit card as the company may offer a special targeted offer for their existing users which is usually much better than their public offers.

Some users raise concerns about the different interest rates offered. Generally I say to just pay your credit card statements on time and you do not have to worry about these rates. Be smart and live within your means, the bonuses are not worth it if you are paying a bunch of interest.

Obviously every user is different so which credit cards they want is different too. In future posts, we will offer reviews of various credit cards and why/why not they may be right for you.

Airport Review - Barcelona-El Prat International Airport (BCN)

As every parent knows, traveling with kids is hard. Don’t get me wrong, vacationing with them is fun but traveling (i.e. actually getting to and from your destination) could feel like torture. Anything to help ease this process is greatly appreciated.

Recently we went on a family trip to Spain and had a very enjoyable experience. We were pleasantly surprised that even leaving was a good experience at the Barcelona-El Prat International Airport (BCN).

After checking in and lining up for security, we were escorted to a separate security area designated just for families. Getting your kids and their bags through security is hard enough without other passengers breathing down your necks so having this special area where we could take a little extra time was very much appreciated.

We then walked out to the terminal and rode several moving escalators to our gate. From my own experiences, walking through some airports sometimes felt like you were walking a 5K.

When we reached the gate waited our biggest surprise: a playground inside the terminal. We take these things for granted since we see them at McDonald’s and Burger King all the time but when you have to wait an hour or two for the flight, any distraction for the kids feels like a small miracle. In fact, it is probably what I remember most about the trip!

American Express Platinum Reviewed

I recently signed for American Express Platinum that has $550 annual fee.  $550 fee is a big step for me. However, I am getting $500 back by applying for 5 global entries for my parents, my husband, my daughter and I. So $550 is not so bad after all if I add the benefit of $200 airline credit and $200 Uber ride plus lounge access, priority pass, gold status for SPG, Hilton, and Marriott top with 60,000 sign up bonus.  Then this card gives me more value than what I paid for.  60,000 bonus points alone can get me a round trip ticket to Europe.

Most people that own this credit card usually lives in such a luxury lifestyle. Most of them don’t even care about points or miles since they can already afford business/first class airfare.

Do I belong in such an elite class?

I was a refugee child who used to live in a pigbarn and took a bath in a small creek in the jungle. I have came along way. I have a lovely family. I have a good carreer in the IT field. I also have two small businesses to generate enough income to help build wells, sponsor a children hospital and feed the poors in my home country Cambodia. For $250 I can build a well for 2 families.  And for $400 I can save a woman’s life from becoming a sex trifficing victim. Because of that I bite my tonge and fly Spirit and Fronteir when there is such a cheap fare.

I could never imagine myself paying a large amount of money just to fly business class when economy class will get me there too with a much lower cost.  Of course I love luxury lifestyle and I like how they treat me differently when I have an elite status. But I don’t want to pay a large amount of money  for it. This is why I have became obsess about collecting points and miles so I can afford a luxury lifestyle without breaking my bank account.

Wether you like it or not I am already in this elite club. And I do enjoy its benefits.  A five star hotel sure is a lot nicer than a pigbarn.

Redeeming miles testimony

I was born and raised in Cambodia. I came to America back in March of 2006. I traveled to my country often and I usually bought the cheapest airfare possible it doesn’t matter what airline it is. I signed up with all of their loyalty membership but never used any of them.  I do like to travel often to see different parts of the world.

So after my Spain trip back in February 2017 I decided to do more research about traveling I came across a lot of blogs and websites about traveling using points and miles. I immediately started the process.  I saved up enough points to redeem 2 RT business class to Cambodia from Houston with United mileage plus. I was pretty excited about that. However, it got cancelled due to Hurricane Harvey. So I changed my plan to redeem in 4 separate trips all economy class (I put aside business class dream for now).

  1. A San Francisco trip the end of October. 3 round trip from IAH – SFO the end of October for 75,000 Mileage plus points plus $33.60.
  2. Japan trip in November.  I am using this trip to earn Marriott platinum status challenge and take advantage of the Mega bonus challenge too.
    a. 1 night in Tokyo at Hilton for 60,000 points.
    b. 1 night in Kyoto at Crowne Plaza for 30,000 IHG points
    c. 2 and half one way flight from HND – ITM for 9,450 Avios points plus $2.61
  3. A fully paid for by points for Hawaii trip February 2018.

  1. 3 multi-cities trip from IAH – HNL – HNL – OGG – OGG – IAH  for 135,000 Mileage plus points Plus $33.60
  2. 5 nights at Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki for 230,000 Hhonor points.
  3. 2 Nights at Hyatt Regency Maui with free 2 night’s redemption.

  1. Europe trip in July 2018

  1. 3 multi- cities trips from IAH –LHR and FCO – IAH for 180,000 mileage plus points plus and $219.28.
  2. 4 nights in London with IHG rewards points for 160,000 points
  3. 3 nights in Paris with Hyatt for 45,000 points
  4. Currently working on getting Marriott points and mega bonus challenge  for 3 nights in Rome
My husband and I both have a full-time, 40 hours per week, same office everyday jobs. We started the Points for Asians blog to share our experience how to maximize your points and miles through out your everyday purchases including your phone, electricity, and cable bill etc. You don’t have to be a millionaire or travel all the time to afford business class seat everyday people like us can do it too.

Introduction - Arun

Points/loyalty programs are a waste of time.

That’s what I used to tell myself. I had joined all types of such programs in my twenties as I traveled all over the world with whatever vacation time I had available. From all these efforts, I could not even get a free soda.

Then one day my co-worker Joe was telling me of a family trip he had scheduled for Europe (London, Paris, Rome, Venice, Zurich, Munich, Prague, Athens, Santorini, Dublin) all paid for by points (airfare, hotels, trains, buses, tours) for four weeks in the middle of the peak summer season. Now Joe is known for being a thrifty guy who buys all his clothes at Ross and Target so it had me second-guessing my own beliefs about points.

I had to know how Thrifty Joe did it so I researched more and more about the subject. Soon my wife was doing her own research as she knows Thrifty Joe as well and could not believe it either. Free?!? We entered a new level of points/loyalty programs with credit cards, targeted offers, bonuses, status matching, codes, etc. A level that not only offered free flights but flight upgrades, lounge access, meals/drinks, etc. for the whole family.

Points/loyalty programs are NOT a waste of time.

We started the Points for Asians blog to share our own experiences and tips with points/loyalty programs and help you maximize the benefits. My wife and I are both proud Asian-Americans who mostly travel to Asia so our experiences and tips may be particularly useful for those wanting to visit Asia.
